Acne Scar Treatment

We understand the profound negative effect acne and acne scars can have on a person’s well-being. The cause of acne scarring is complex. Acne scars are divided into one of these subgroups:

  • Rolling (softly indented scars)
  • Boxcar (depressed scars with a sharp border)
  • Ice pick (narrow, but deep small scars)
  • Hypertrophic or Keloid (inflamed and thickened scars)
  • Dark pigmentation (discoloration is not true scarring and usually slowly resolves without treatment)
  • Erythematous (pink or red areas but not true scarring, usually slowly resolves without treatment)

Affiliated Dermatologists offers comprehensive treatment for acne scarring including: excisions, punch excisions, chemical peels, and fillers injected underneath scars. Each case must be carefully evaluated and treated by the most appropriate modality. The treatment plan will be tailored for your specific needs to significantly improve the appearance of your skin.

Treatments may work well individually or a combination of treatments may be recommended to provide the maximum amount of improvement in acne scarring.  A treatment plan is developed for each patient’s specific need. This comprehensive acne scarring therapy will give the highest chance for improvement in acne scarring.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a form of controlled surgical scraping, using autoclaved sandpaper or a burr containing diamond particles. It is used to smooth out the texture of the skin and remove scarring or wrinkles that are present on the skin. It is a manual technique that has been used for many years.

The procedure can be done in the office using a local anesthetic. After the procedure is complete, the individual can expect discoloration and scabbing to occur, which will last for five to seven days. Discoloration and swelling can last for two to three months while the area is healing. Scarring after the skin has healed is rare.

Fillers

Fillers are a family of products which are used to enhance the appearance of aging skin and volume loss.   The most common type of filler is hyaluronic acid, a gel substance which when injected produces a naturally enhanced appearance to the face. These products have evolved over the last 15 years to be a sophisticated and minimally invasive way to deter the effects of aging.  The effects can last from 6-12 months.

Fillers are introduced under the skin to improve some of the most common areas of concern:

  • Smile Lines “Those pesky bar codes above the lip”
  • Lip Volumizing
  • Lip Border Definition
  • Cheek Augmentation
  • Nasolabial Folds
  • Marionette Lines
  • Facial Wrinkles

When seeking a consultation with one of our physicians, the planning begins.  You and your provider will review the products and outline a program designed with your needs in mind.   An initial consultation with the provider is required before the procedure can be scheduled.  We look forward to enhancing your appearance.

The filler outlook has expanded, in fact exploded in past years, with new products on the horizon.

We currently carry a wide spectrum of filler products

  • Juvéderm® Ultra XC and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC
  • Voluma®
  • Vobella®
  • Vollure™
  • Restylane® Silk
  • Restylane® Lyft

Neurotoxins (BOTOX, Dysport)

At Affiliated Dermatologists Botulinum Toxin injections are among the most popular facial rejuvenation treatments available. The treatments we do with Botulinum Toxin are completely safe and have been approved by the FDA for a variety of medical and cosmetic applications. The neurotoxin injections relax the facial muscles that are responsible for stubborn wrinkles around the mouth, eyes, forehead, and elsewhere on the face. When these muscles relax, the skin becomes smoother, and wrinkles fade or disappear entirely.

The neurotoxin treatment process is quick, convenient, safe, and essentially painless. A precise amount of the product is injected into the muscles that require treatment. The injection process takes only a few minutes, after which the patients can return to their normal activities immediately. As the injections take effect over the next week, facial muscles will relax, smoothing away wrinkles and fine lines to produce a more youthful appearance that will last for up to 3-6 months.

BOTOX®

Botox® Cosmetic is the best known single cosmetic product in the US.  The product is a neuromodulator used to temporarily diminish the dynamic wrinkles of the face.  The most frequent sites for injection are the glabellar area (between the eyebrows) and lateral canthus area (crow’s feet).

It can also be used for fine lines around the mouth, and shaping the brow.

BOTOX® THERAPEUTIC is used to diminish underarm (axillary) sweating, or hyperhidrosis.

Spider Vein Therapy (Sclerotherapy)

Spider veins are small, thin, red or purple colored tiny veins that most commonly appear on the thighs, calves and ankles. Many factors contribute to the development of spider veins, including, heredity, pregnancy and other events that cause hormonal shifts. They can be of cosmetic concern to both men and women if you are embarrassed by their appearance.

Sclerotherapy is safe and effective procedure for the treatment of spider veins, and has been used for many years. A purified solution is injected via a very thin needle (thin enough to fit inside the tiny vessel). The solution damages the inner lining of the spider veins, causing them to shrink and dissolve away. It takes a few weeks to see the full effect of the treatment of these veins, and in the meantime a temporary redness is expected at the injection site.

VBeam

Vbeam laser delivers an intense but gentle burst of light into selectively targeted areas of the skin. The light is absorbed be specific blood vessels or melanin pigmented areas in the dermis depending in the condition being treated. Factors such as age, color, and type of lesion as well as location, all determine whether lesions can be removed.

Safe, effective, and comfortable, pulsed dye laser has been shown to be effective for the treatment of:

  • Facial and leg veins
  • Freckles, sun and age spots
  • Poikiloderm (mottled or reddish-brown discolorations)
  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Vascular lesions
  • Rosacea
  • Angiomas and hemanangiomas
  • Pigmented lesions

Treatment with the Vbeam may consist of multiple treatments. For facial veins, 1-2 treatments may be sufficient but additional treatments are not uncommon. These treatments occur on an average of every 6-12 weeks depending on the area and type of treatment.

Vbeam is the only pulsed dye laser that uses a dynamic cooling device (DCD) to protect and cool the skin during the procedure. This device maximizes client comfort, protecting the skin by delivering a shot of cryogen to the epidermis prior to each laser pulse. The feeling of the laser pulse has been described as being snapped by a rubber band or a slight stinging sensation. Most patients’ tolerate this procedure without any need for an anesthetic, but for some patient’s a topical numbing cream may be applied 30-45 minutes before treatment to reduce the sensation of the laser pulses. Following laser treatment, the area may continue to sting slightly or feel warm like sunburn. Appling ice packs post treatment can alleviate any discomfort experienced during the procedure.

Depending on the type and area of treatment, patients will have different post treatment results and regimes. Some patient’s may experience bruising or redness that lasts for several days up to several weeks, while others may only have slight redness for several hours.
